$28 Million Popeye Now On Display At Wynn

Popeye Statue At Wynn Las Vegas Hotel And Casino
Popeye Statue At Wynn

You may have heard about Steve Wynn buying a Popeye statue for over $28 million. You may have ignored like I did because it’s just a rich dude buying art.

That rich dude decided to put his art on display in the esplanade (mall) between his beautiful Las Vegas casino towers and I’m impressed. I actually dig this statue and might make a trip over to Wynn just to see it.

There is no time frame on how long Popeye will be on display at Wynn so if you appreciate art (or Popeye) you might not want to wait to check it out.

My Favorite Part Of Downtown Grand

Downtown Grand Las Vegas Hotel Lobby
Downtown Grand Lobby

I spent much of the day Monday exploring Downtown Grand. I have mixed feelings on the HOTEL casino. Overall I love the vibe and decor. Downtown Grand, like Cosmopolitan before and SLS Las Vegas next year is a hotel that has a casino.

There are 16 restaurants and 650 hotel rooms that are a part of Downtown Grand complex. There are about 10-15 gaming tables and a very small sportsbook with just 12 chairs. Gaming is an amenity. It’s not the focus for Downtown Grand.

That’s just the way the Las Vegas casino market is today. The casino resort I grew up loving is changing into a hotel casino. I might as well get used to it and enjoy it for what it is.

The photo above ia a couple of huge leather chairs and a piece of art constructed of hundreds of dice in the lobby. The chairs are so comfortable that I could have sat there waiting for other people to take pictures for hours.

Downtown Grand is a beautiful hotel that I can enjoy. I’m not sure I’ll gamble much at Downtown Grand but I’ll certainly enjoy some drinks and wifi in one of those chairs.

I have pictures on the ECG Tumblr but you should check out the awesome coverage on Vital Vegas and Vegas Chatter.

Cosmopolitan Says Out With The Shoe In With The Dogs

I haven’t been to the Cosmopolitan all year until Easter Sunday (GASP!) so forgive me if this isn’t new. On the second floor between the sportsbook and restaurants towards Wicked Spoon there used to be a giant high heeled shoe that people used to pose inside of and take pictures. On my trip this weekend the shoe was gone and replaced with 6 dog statues in a circle.

The statues are about 5 feet tall and were packed with people taking pictures. Unlike the shoe, which mostly appealed to women there were men, women, boys and girls huddling around the dogs.

I like dogs and I think switching up the art in a playful manner, like this, on a regular basis would be a nice thing to keep people interested. I can hear the complaining visitors now “Ugh, Cosmo still has the same damn shoe from last year on the second floor. Can’t they get something new to take pictures with?”

Woof.
