In just three months, on August 23, Life will open as the centerpiece of Nazarian’s new SLS Hotel and Casino. It’s where rowdy bachelorettes and drunk conventioneers will buy $1,000 bottles of champagne while aerialists perform overhead.
Yes, SLS Las Vegas is being touted as Sam Nazarian’s hotel despite his company’s small ownership stake. As I’m writing this there’s a hearing for SLS Las Vegas’ gaming license where it was clarified that SBE/Nazarian “work for Stockbridge” and that technically Rob Oseland will really be running the ship day to day at SLS Las Vegas..
Oseland will be responsible for all SBE operations; the non-gaming businesses #lvrj
Sam Nazarian is a figurehead and spokesperson. He’s the famous name that SLS Las Vegas can use to market itself. In today’s media landscape this small ownership stake by a spokesperson should come as no surprise to anyone.
Jay-Z owned less than 1% of the Brooklyn Nets when he was called an owner. Magic Johnson owns the Los Angeles Dodgers but owns less than 3% of the team.
Even though calling these people “owners” seems like false representation it isn’t. They are “owners” hired as spokespeople. Jay-Z (especially) and Magic Johnson bring a cool factor and little more to their businesses interests. This arrangement benefits both parties as it offers something neither would have without each other.
Nazarian and SBE offer almost the same thing to SLS Las Vegas but they actually bring some kind of business portfolio to SLS Las Vegas. That’s probably why they own 10% and not less than 3% of the business.
I’m always excited when I have contributors to the site. It’s something I don’t do often enough but that will change in the future. This week Gill Alexander, AKA Betting Dork, offers a little fun to the site.
A couple weeks ago I mentioned that the initial proposal for the New York Mets Citi Field came with a casino attached to it. That proposal was shot down by New York City before it even reached Major League Baseball for approval. Gill looks at a few Major League Baseball stadiums that could use the addition of addition a casino.
Even though some of his takes seem tongue and cheek a lot of what he has to say rings true. You can download the awesome Betting Dork Podcast (If you follow me on twitter you know how much I enjoy this podcast) or visit Dr. Bob Sports to learn more about Gill and follow his baseball picks.

According to court papers in the NCAA v Christie New Jersey sports betting case, Bud Selig’s shocked, appalled, and in disbelief that people bet on baseball? Well now that daughter Wendy’s not around to snitch, he’d never, ever believe the video poker machines on the back of every seat at his old team’s ballpark.
The Los Angeles Dodgerswere sold earlier this week to a group lead by Magic Johnson for $2 billion. The purchase has a lot of implications. Most revolve around the purchase price and how the team will be able to be improved. That’s not really a concern of mine.
In this bidding process a group that included former Dodgers player Orel Hershiser and Steve Garvey lost. They proposed the renovations of Dodger Stadium above. I’m not sure adding seats to a stadium people don’t want to visit is a smart move, but we’ll probably never see that.
What’s interesting is the timing of the decision. Major League Baseball waited to the very last minute before the season started to announce the new owners. This left very little time before the start of the season for the purchase details to take place. The team will be in limbo for a little while waiting for the new owners to take over.
In the purchase process Orel Hershiser has seemingly stopped playing poker. He’s been an aspiring poker pro for a few years now. His poker home has been Red Rock Casino. Nobody has seen him in some time. Now that the baseball season is starting he’ll be on the road covering games for ESPN for the summer.
I wonder is Orel Hershiser’s quest for poker greatness will resume. I’ll keep an eye out for him at Red Rock Casino on his off days.
