Every morning before the Kentucky Derby I think that I’d like to get into betting horse racing. Win or lose every evening after the Kentucky Derby I realize that will never happen.
My 5 horse exacta box lost even though I had the winner. Hopefully you did better than me. If you’re into horse racing more than I am you’ll probably enjoy odds below from William Hill for Horse Of The Year and Triple Crown or Preakness for California Chrome.
I’ll see horse racing again in 2015.

When I first saw the list of Kentucky Derby Prop Bets from William Hill I thought to myself that it’s cool that these exist. After mildly editing them I’m floored by the amount of betting options for the Kentucky Derby.
The ability of sportsbook operators to make this many prop bets available is how sports betting will grow over the next few years. Prop bets are what attract fringe gamblers to sports betting. If you’re in Vegas and want to bet any of these just know that the odds will change on any significant wagers.

William Hill focuses much of their marketing on getting people to use their app to place bets. Every now and again they offer promotions to entice people to make bets with actual money. This promotion for a free mint julep glass with a $20 bet on the Kentucky Derby makes sense since the average age of horse bettors is 95. 95-year-old men can’t work apps anyway. Also, get off their lawn.
You can bet horse racing futures with the William Hill app but you can’t bet on individual horse races. This is the case with all of the Nevada sports betting apps. Since I live in Vegas I always have my sports betting apps loaded with funds. Including horse betting I use apps to place bets about 95% of my bets. I’m past the point in my life where I care too much about getting a drink ticket for a $4 Bud for each $50 I bet in person.
A couple of weeks ago I was invited to have lunch at the new Bagatelle Beach at Tropicana. This was the soft opening and a great way to kick off Cinco De Mayo weekend before losing every bet I made on the Kentucky Derby. Since this was the soft opening I was among the first guests.
Comparing Bagatelle Beach to Encore Beach Club is only fair in that they’re the same concept but there’s nothing at Tropicana that’s done on the same level as Wynn so it’s really not a fair comparison. Besides I was at Bagatelle Beach for lunch outside and not to scope out bikini babes. Note: Every person serving lunch was a dude, the bikini waitresses seem like they are only for pool customers.
Bagatelle Beach is set up with separate areas for people who want to party at the pool and people who just want to grab lunch. There dining tables set up in a shaded are that are fairly secluded and above the action of the beach club. There are also a few booths closer to the pools with coverings providing shade as you can see below.
Lunch began with a cocktail called Le Diablo. I don’t normally drink tequila but I usually enjoy a drink with fresh berries and ginger beer so I figured I’d give it a whirl. Since I was so early the fresh blueberries hadn’t arrived so they used strawberry instead. Both drinks were tasty but the original concept of the drink was much better. I always recommend sticking with blueberries when they’re part of the recipe. Additionally, ginger beer is probably my favorite mixer for cocktails.
For lunch I had a chicken and turkey club on a croissant. The sandwich was good but nothing particularly special. At $12 (maybe $14) this was priced similarly to most restaurant sandwiches on the strip. Combined with the al fresco dining and drinks this made for a fine base of food for the day. I wouldn’t be upset eating this sandwich again but I wouldn’t go out of my way for it.
Since I had to drive after lunch I took it easy on the tasty boozy drinks and imbibed a few cups of iced coffee. I don’t look at a day/beach club as the kind of place that many people are ordering iced coffee so I was pleasantly surprised they had it available. While not the highlight of the day it was a nice way to close it.
I saw some friends dining out in the booths as I was winding down my lunch so I grabbed this sweet view of the entire Bagatelle Beach complex which comes complete with Hooters in the background.
Bagatelle Beach isn’t for everyone. The music is very loud since this is a day club and the DJ mix is today’s EDM (Deadmau5, Calvin Harris) and hip hop (Lil Wayne, Doctor Dre). I enjoyed the music and thought it added to the vibe but it’s not for everyone.
I only visit the Tropicana a couple of times a year or so and this may be one of the few times I visit during 2013. The Tropicana isn’t a hotel many people I know visit so there’s rarely an excuse to stop by. Actually, most people I know don’t even stay on the south end of the strip unless they have a conference at Mandalay Bay.
I would return to Bagatelle Beach if someone else wanted to go there for lunch but probably wouldn’t go out of my way to return. I’ve already recommend Bagatelle Beach to a couple of people as a place to dine outdoors on that end of the Vegas strip.
Lunch was paid for by Bagatelle Beach but my thoughts and pictures are my own.
Watching the ponies race at the casinos in Atlantic City is the closest thing the city has to a sportsbook but that’s changing. Only 5 of the 12 casinos in Atlantic City still have horse racing simulcasts.
Last Sunday, March 31, Trump Taj Mahal became the latest Atlantic City casino to get out of the simulcasting business when it closed its racing operation Sunday. Now only five of the city’s 12 casinos, including Borgata, Bally’s Atlantic City, Caesars Atlantic City, Harrah’s Resort, and the Showboat Casino Hotel, continue to offer simulcasting. The simulcast parlor at Taj Mahal will be used for live keno and to extend the poker room.
When I frequented Atlantic City I only went to the horse books a few times for bigger races like the Kentucky Derby or the Belmont Stakes. I’m not into the horses and the race books did nothing to make me feel comfortable enough to want to stay and see what it was like.
Horse racing only accounts for about .7% of gaming revenue in Las Vegas (about half of sports betting) but there are a lot of people watching the horses and every now and again it looks like something I’d like to try. Betting on horse racing may be the only way to get a drink ticket in some sportsbooks.
Most of the spaces that I remember in Atlantic City that were devoted to to horse racing were small and probably couldn’t be renovated to account for the, relatively, large space needed for when sports betting is legalized in a few years when the powers that be get their act together. The Borgata racebook above may be the exception and is probably the largest in Atlantic City.
It’s time for the Kentucky Derby and the beginning of the Triple Crown of horse racing. It is supposed to rain all day tomorrow. I’m not sure what that means for the races, but that usually only favors a few horses. I’ll do research just before the race and tumble or tweet my picks. Here are the odds from sportsbook.com.
If you have a real strong feeling and want to go for broke there are odds if anyone will be a triple crown winner this year. I wouldn’t make a -800 bet, but that’s the odds of no Triple Crown winner and the smart money.
Earlier this week there was an awesome and funny twitter meme #SeinfeldDerbyHorseNames. I know Seinfeld like the back of my hand. There were tons of funny entries. Here is a sample, but check out the up to date offerings.

I don’t follow horse racing too much, but I always pay attention to the Triple Crown races. This weekend will be no different with the Kentucky Derby taking place.
I usually make an exacta wager or two on the Kentucky Derby. This year I’ll probably add a couple of long shots to the exacta mix. Unlike most years I’ll get a magazine and study up on my flight out to Vegas.
Click the ad above to place your bets on the race. There are a slew of odd prop bets that are too far above my knowledge to get into. I never thought I’d see a bet I couldn’t handle. That time has finally come. To each their own!
