Baseball Prospectus just released 2016 MLB Season Win Total PECOTA Projections. If you wager on baseball or play fantasy baseball you are probably familiar with the wealth of information available on Baseball Prospectus (BP).

If you’re not familiar with BP or PECOTA I’ll share some information after the standings. If you are familiar with BP and PECOTA you might find these projections helpful when looking at betting MLB season win totals and MLB futures (below).

This is only a snippet of the information from Baseball Prospectus. There are definitely some surprises and projections I don’t understand right now and will have to dig deeper to understand. You can see the full projections Baseball Prospectus.

What is PECOTA? Here’s some info from Baseball Prospectus.

(PECOTA) Stands for Player Empirical Comparison and Optimization Test Algorithm. PECOTA is BP’s proprietary system that projects player performance based on comparison with historical player-seasons. There are three elements to PECOTA:

1) Major-league equivalencies, to allow us to use minor-league stats to project how a player will perform in the majors;
2) Baseline forecasts, which use weighted averages and regression to the mean to produce an estimate of a player’s true talent level;
3) A career-path adjustment, which incorporates information about how comparable players’ stats changed over time.

Check out the PECOTA section of the glossary for more on the system’s intricacies.

Current NBA Championship Odds From William Hill. Thanks LeBron.

LeBron James - Cleveland Cavaliers
LeBron James – Cleveland Cavaliers

The last time I looked at NBA Championship futures I said:

If I were placing a bet today (I would never) I might drop a minimum bet on the Chicago Bulls at 10-1 Cleveland Cavaliers at 50-1.

Low and behold the LeBron James signed with the Cavaliers and their odds are down to 9/2 (that’s 4.5-1) from 50-1. I don’t think the Cavs will win it all but that’s a nice value play. The Bulls odds are still 10-1 and probably not going anywhere.

Right now the New York Knicks look like the only team whose odds might change drastically when Carmelo Anthony re-signs but they still have no shot at the NBA championship.

The only other change in odds I see are the Houston Rockets if Chris Bosh signs. They might swing to 8-1 between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Los Angeles Clippers.

Updated odds to win the NBA Championship are below.

If I were placing a bet today (I would never) I might drop a minimum bet on the Chicago Bulls at 10-1 Cleveland Cavaliers at 50-1. I don’t think odds for either team will get better as the new season unfolds.

Baseball Futures: World Series

Spring Training is here and it’s time for baseball!  This is one of my favorite times of the year.  Since I’m so stoked I think it’s time to look forward to the season with MLB futures odds.  We’ll look at the futures from sportsbook.com from division winners and then to win the world series.  As always, check sportsbook.com for exact odds as they change all the time.

I don’t like to make many futures bets, in part, because I don’t like to have my money tied up for almost an entire year.  That being said I decided to make one baseball futures play this year and that’s all.  I shared that with you yesterday with the NL Championship futures.

Besides the Brewers, my lone plays for the season is watching as many games as possible and playing in my one fantasy baseball.  I don’t think much about the options beyond the favorites (Phillies and Red Sox) for the World Series and betting chalk bores me so I stay away.  Click any team below to go to sportsbook.com for up to date odds.

Baseball Futures: National League

The Phillies are the obvious favorite to win the National League with their amazing pitching staff.  They were also big favorites last year when the San Francisco Giants picked them apart with their great pitching.  The Giants are only 7.5-1 to win the NL this year.  That’s not long enough odds to me for a team that got hot at the right time.  My one and only play in baseball futures went to the Milwaukee Brewers.  I saw (and bet) them at Planet Hollywood at 25-1 to win the NL and they’re now 15-1 everywhere.  The Brewers added some excellent pitchers and have Prince Fielder playing for a free agent contract next year.  They should still have long odds to the Phillies, but I think they have a lot in their favor and will keep my fingers crossed watching one of my favorite teams in baseball all season.

Baseball Futures: American League

Spring Training is here and it’s time for baseball!  This is one of my favorite times of the year.  Since I’m so stoked I think it’s time to look forward to the season with MLB futures odds.  We’ll look at the futures from sportsbook.com by winning divisions and then to win the world series.  As always, check sportsbook.com for exact odds as they change all the time.

I don’t like to make many futures bets, in part, because I don’t like to have my money tied up for almost an entire year.  That being said I decided to make one baseball futures play this year and that’s all.

I didn’t see anything intriguing in the AL this year because I don’t see anyone challenging the Boston Red Sox for the league.  The only team I think may be a viable long shot are the Chicago White Sox since they should have be able to bomb and have a good short playoff rotation (if they make it), but they’ve gone from 15-1 in the winter to 10-1 this week.  About half the value was lost in that time.  That kept me away.
