College Football Margin Of Victory Data

College Football Map
College Football Map

There are key point spreads in football betting and knowing them helps make you a better sports bettor. I snagged this college football margin of victory data from a huge post of college football data on Wizard of Odds last week.

If you’re a seasoned football bettor you probably already know that 3 and 7 are the key numbers in final results. The information below shows why those numbers are so important.

The following list shows the count and frequency of the top 5 margins of victory in college football. You can see the full chart on Wizard of Odds.

  1. 3 points – 9.63%
  2. 7 points – 7.31%
  3. 10 points – 4.34%
  4. 14 points – 4.32%
  5. 17 points – 3.96%

You’ll often hear veteran sports bettors talk about playing the points in football as much as they talk about the match ups themselves. The numbers above are considered the key numbers and you see why. Almost 10% of college football games surveyed ended with exactly a 3 point margin of victory.

These 5 numbers make up almost 30% of the margins of victory in college football games. This is good to know when you’re choosing which teams you want to bet. A half point on one of these key numbers can be the difference between making a winning bet and a losing bet.

If you’re a numbers dork there’s a lot more information on the full Wizard of Odds college football post. If you can retain lots of numbers I encourage you to read the full post. I decided to pull this bit of information because it was easy to digest.

Rory McIlroy Wins The British Open. His Dad Wins A Sweet Bet!

Rory McIlroy
Rory McIlroy

Gambling outside of America is a different animal. Last weeks blog post about overseas gambling should give you an idea about how big sports betting is overseas. The bet Rory McIlroy’s dad made with Ladbrokes should confirm sports betting’s popularity for you.

When Rory McIlroy was 15 years old his father and some friends placed a bet that he would win the British Open within 10 years. Ladbrokes only took a £200 bet on the 500-1 shot. Converted to dollars that’s only $341. This was the last British Open Rory McIlroy could win for his father’s bet to pay off. Boy did it pay off!

The $341 USD bet on Rory McIlroy  will pay out $171,000

BOOM! If Rory McIlroy was American his father wouldn’t have been able to make this kind of bet legally. As sports betting continues to grow and expand in America bets like this will become legal.

Even though I don’t think that this is the kind of bet I would make I can’t wait until it’s possible that I could make the bet. I think long-term wagers like this would be very popular. The general public would eat up the opportunity to bet on a player like Jameis Winston or any other popular college football player winning a Super Bowl today if they could.

Las Vegas Bowl Scheduled For Saturday Before Christmas

Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl
Las Vegas Bowl

The Las Vegas Bowl is one of the most popular early college football bowl games. This year the game will be played December 20th, which is the Saturday before Christmas. Tickets sell really well (42K last year, that’s more than UNLV football sells all season <burn>) and since the Pac-12 and Mountain West teams are relatively close there are always plenty of people visiting Vegas for the game. Last year’s game was USC vs. Fresno State.

Tickets aren’t on sale for the game yet but you can follow LVBowl.com to stay up to date on that. Likewise, I’ll probably have a blog post on Vegas Chatter when the game is announced like I did last year.

The week before Christmas is one of the cheapest times to visit Las Vegas. Even if you’re not sure that you want to make the trip for the game you might want to put rooms on hold sooner than later just in case. You can always cancel hotel reservations, just ask for the cancellation policy when you hold your room.

College Football Talk has more information:

The Las Vegas Bowl will be played on the Saturday before Christmas, December 20. ESPN announced the date and time for the bowl game, which pairs up teams from the Pac-12 and Mountain West Conference, on Tuesday.

This year’s Las Vegas Bowl will be given a mid-afternoon kickoff time, 3:30 p.m. EST (12:30 p.m. PST), and will be televised nationally on ABC. The game typically takes the Mountain West champion — it is not obligated to take the conference champion — and has the sixth pick of available Pac-12 bowl-eligible teams. Last season’s game saw over 42,000 fans come out for a match-up between USC and Mountain West Conference champion Fresno State. The Trojans won the game, 45-20. In a bit of an odd scheduling quirk, Fresno State and USC will open the 2014 season playing each other in a quick turnaround rematch, this time in Los Angeles.

The Mountain West Conference owns a record of 9-6 n the Las Vegas Bowl. The Pac-12 is 6-6.

Johnny Football Turns 21, Goes Low Rollin At Hard Rock In Vegas

Johnny Manziel Playing Blackjack At Hard Rock Las Vegas
Johnny Manziel Playing Blackjack

Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel turned 21 on Friday and like any famous person he went to Las Vegas to celebrate. Can’t argue with that! He hung out at the Hard Rock like many bro’s visiting Vegas. You may remember that Johnny Football is no stranger to casinos.

Now that he’s of age, Johnny Football bro’d down with a little blackjack. Even though he may be the son of a rich man he wasn’t showing it. He was playing $10 blackjack like a normal college bro. All blackjack at Hard Rock pays 6:5. Not the best choice. Johnny Football (and the honey badger) don’t care about payouts.

Johnny Football is already a spoiled rich kid and will become a his own rich man when he enters the NFL draft next year. Maybe he’ll step his game up to compete with Charles Barkley levels of gambling when he has his own money.

Update: A source says that John Football did not step into the sportsbook all weekend.

William Hill Fails In Amish Land (As It Should)

William Hill Mobile Sports Betting App Fail
William Hill Mobile App Fail

Part of my recent vacation took me to visiting family in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. That’s where I met the little cat who you met last week. While BSing about sports I decided to see what would happen if I tried to use my William Hill app to place a wager on a game outside of Nevada state lines.

FAIL!

Using the app wasn’t an entire fail but placing the wager didn’t work. I was able to browse all of the point spreads for the college football games I was curious about. I was able to line up a parlay as well but when I went to place the wager I was met with the fail screen above.

The app is still useful when you’re not in Nevada even if you can’t place wagers. You can keep funds in your account when you’re not in Las Vegas and this is a good way to keep track of actual live odds and point spreads. You can use the point spreads to practice wagering while you are away from Las Vegas or you can use the info to prepare for your wagers just before your next trip.

I was expecting a fail when I tried to place the wager. William Hill (and all sports gaming apps) not only track your phone by its internal GPS but they triangulate it’s location using mobile phone satellites. I’m not sure how that all works but the Nevada Gaming Commission is very strict about this.

I’d like to personally thank William Hill for not allowing me to make this particular parlay while I was away. I don’t remember the specific teams anymore but I know it lost. Onward and upward!

Football! Football!! Football!!!

Red Rock Resort Las Vegas Sportsbook

Replace baseball with football in the TV screens above. RIP baseball.

Football season kicks off tonight with a host of college football games throughout the various ESPN, Fox and CBS TV networks. It’s an amazing time of year in Las Vegas and the excitement for the first games of the season rivals the excitement for the big games. More money is bet on football than any other sport and the crowds in the sportsbooks prove that.

Yesterday I was at the Red Rock Casino sportsbook and it was already more crowded than a normal Wednesday for baseball season. There were lines at 3pm with people placing bets and there were football sheets left around all over. The Red Rock sportsbook looked as if they’re expecting a large crowd tonight as they set up cocktail tables which are reserved only for the busiest times of the year.

While baseball is my favorite sport football is catching up the longer I live in Las Vegas and I can’t wait for football! It begins in just a few hours!

FOOTBALL!

FOOTBALL!!

FOOTBALL!!!

I’ll be watching the games somewhere tonight…

Fox Sports 1 Bringing Point Spreads To The Masses

Fox Sports 1 Point Spreads
Fox Sports 1 Showing Point Spreads

Fox Sports 1 launched as a 24 hour all sports network last week. While CBS and NBC have launched 24 hour sports networks in the past year it looks as if Fox Sports 1 will be the greatest challenger to ESPN. ESPN is the largest all sports network with the most history so each network has to carve their own niche with sports fans. NBC Sports Network has focused its programming around the NHL, NFL, Premier League and fringe sports like cycling while CBS Sports Network seems to be a minor league sports network filling much of its programming with lesser tier college football and college basketball.

Fox Sports 1 will be a home for NFL, UFC, college football and soccer spillover from regular Fox programming. I’m assuming that they’ll integrate MLB into next year’s shows. Fox Sports 1 seems to have the most upper tier programming to take some market share from big brother, ESPN. In addition to strong major league sports they have a strong roster of former professional athletes and professional broadcasters for their regular TV shows (hello Charissa and Erin).

Mainstream sports media has tiptoed around gambling in the past even though it plays a large role in popularity of certain sports – especially football. One way that Fox Sports 1 is differentiating itself from ESPN is not hiding from gambling – at least not hiding from the fact that gambling exists. Fox Sports 1 has point spreads displayed when they run upcoming matchups on their bottom line or side bar (above). This isn’t just for football as they had betting odds for the UFC fights last weekend.

Fox Sports 1 Bottom Line UFC Odds

I haven’t noticed any of the talking heads on Fox Sports 1 speaking about gambling directly but this is the first time that I can remember seeing a TV network using point spreads all day long, not just for pick segments.

I’m curious to see how they incorporate point spreads into football wrap ups. Discussing ATS (Against The Spread) records along side of straight up records would really open the door to sports betting discussion. As a sports bettor and fan I would love this.

BCS Championship Game Will Be Most Bet College Football Game…Ever

According to Jimmy Vaccaro from William Hill US the BCS Championship game between Alabama and Notre Dame will be the most bet on college football game ever. While next year’s BCS Championship game will be the most bet on college football game ever, it will still only do about 20% as much business as the Super Bowl.

You can see this and get more information about the BCS Championship game from Jimmy Vaccaro in the video below from Las Vegas 8 News Now that refuses to embed. Stupid video.

If you follow me on twitter you know I use the William Hill app for sports betting (along with Sports Connection from Station Casinos). Both are only legal to use in Nevada.
