You must be 21 to set up a wagering account. You must set up accounts in person to get started.

Accounts must be funded at first by using cash. All accounts can be reloaded using cash but a few offer other options. Check each app for specifics as this may change.

Sports wagering apps can only be used in Nevada at this time. To make sure you’re not using out-of-state your location is tracked by GPS and satellite by the sports book operator.

It’s The App That Does Everything You Want

Station Casinos App Ad

In April I wrote a review about the new Station Casinos app for Vegas Chatter. I’ve written a lot of app reviews and I can usually find additional features that will make an app more user-friendly. The Station Casinos app really blew me away simply because it had just about everything a Vegas casino app should have. As I told a friend, you’d be surprised how many Vegas casino apps are completely useless.

Rebecca, the big dawg at Vegas Chatter, sent me a heads up on Saturday that Station Casinos used a quote from the post in their June mailer. This is the first time I’ve seen a business use words from an article I’ve written in their marketing materials. I’m stoked about this so I just wanted to share.

Download the STN App for free to see for yourself. It’s best used when you have a Boarding Pass players club account.

New Games And New Partnerships For MyVegas

Sherlock Hound MyVegas Facebook
Sherlock Hound

Earlier this week MyVegas launched a new Facebook game, Sherluck Hound, then they launched a new game for their mobile app Around The World in 80 Days. MyVegas is a great way to get freebies or discounts in Vegas and now they’ve opened the rewards to MGM Resorts and partner businesses outside of Las Vegas. Here are some highlights.

  • PLAYSTUDIOS and MGM Resorts International expand rewards program to Beau Rivage and Gold Strike in Mississippi
  • For the first time, myVEGAS players can redeem rewards at 2 new destinations outside of Las Vegas, NV
  • Reward offerings from Beau Rivage and Gold Strike casino resorts include hotel suite upgrades, rounds of golf, tickets to Saltoriya and Taganai shows, and more

I’m not sure why anyone would want rewards outside of Vegas, but that’s just me. 🙂 Here are some of the rewards available.

Free $25 Bet When You Sign Up For Station Casinos Sports Betting Account

Sports Connection App From Station Casinos
Station Casinos App

I was bouncing around my Station Casinos App (Vegas Chatter review here, the app is great) and noticed a promotion for a free $25 sports bet when you sign up for a Sports Connection mobile sports betting account. I don’t love the lines and point spreads from Station Casinos (especially for baseball) but I do like how the app connects with the Boarding Pass players club. Sue me, I like that can get some extra players club points from my sports betting. Those “free” cups of Starbucks are nice.

Since you only have to deposit $50 in the account to get this bonus you’re looking at a pretty sweet deal. I wish they had this kind of incentive when I first signed up. If you’re not looking to make Station Casinos one of your regular sports betting outlets in Vegas then this sounds like a good way to grab a free swing at a college or pro football futures bet.

William Hill Unveils “Summer Rewards″ Promotion For Mobile Sports Customers

One of the benefits of using the Station Casinos Sports Connection app to place sports bets is the ability to link the money you spend through the app to your Boarding Pass players club account. You may not get a drink ticket when you bet with your mobile device but you earn points that may be used a drink (or more) at one of the restaurants at a Station Casino. None of the other sports betting apps had this kind of players club/rewards connection until this week.

While William Hill doesn’t have the same players club connection as Station Casinos they’re now offering cash back bonuses if you bet with your mobile device this summer. Straight cash (homey) is probably better than players club points. I’ll be signing up for this later.

Here are the details on the promotion from the press release.

William Hill Race & Sports Book is offering a major new summer incentive program for customers who make their sports wagers using the William Hill Mobile Sports app. With the new “Summer Rewards” promotion, customers can unlock cash rewards up to $100 when wagering with William Hill on their smartphone or tablet.

The promotion is open to all Mobile Sports customers who enroll on the William Hill US website ( between May 5 and August 5. Once enrolled, customers will receive 1 Summer Rewards point for every $1 of sports wagers and double Summer Rewards points for InPlay sports wagers placed through the app during the promotion.

InPlay sports wagering allows bettors to bet the game during the game with LIVE point spreads, totals and money lines. William Hill InPlay Sports wagering is offered this summer for all pro basketball playoff games, select baseball games and soccer matches.

On August 15, enrolled Mobile Sports patrons will automatically receive $1 added to their account balance for every 1,000 Summer Rewards points earned between May 5 and August 5.

“With the NBA and NHL playoffs heating up and the World Cup just around the corner, we are very excited to launch a cashback promotion for sports bettors who enjoy the convenience of wagering on a smartphone or tablet,” said William Hill Director of Marketing Michael Grodsky. “InPlay wagering has been wildly popular and we wanted to make it doubly rewarding for our patrons that like wagering on live odds during the games.”

As an added incentive to new William Hill Mobile Sports customers, a new account registered between May 5 and August 5, 2014 will receive a bonus 5,000 Summer Rewards points with their first qualifying wager.

The William Hill Mobile Sports wagering app is available for iPhone, iPad, or Android devices carried by AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile or Boost Mobile. New accounts can be registered at any of the 76 full-service William Hill sports books throughout Nevada. Accounts can also be funded at any PT’s or Sierra Gold Tavern location in the state. New Bet Rock N Roll Game For MyVegas With Dice Bonus

BetRock N Roll MyVegas Slot Machine Game
Bet Rock N Roll

This is a new version of the Bet Rock N Roll game for MyVegas mobile. There is an added bonus round only available on the mobile game.  When they launched the original game last year players were upset it did not include an extra bonus round so they added one just for the mobile game.

MyVegas can get monotonous because of the repetition in some of the games but this dice bonus is great. They should incorporate more interactivity like this into the game to keep it interesting. See the bonus round below. It plays similar to one of my favorite slot machines in the past year – the Hot Roll bonus round.

Hotel Tonight Rooms Now Available At 9am

Hotel Tonight

Use my code MMeltzer5 for $25 off. (I also get $25 off)

Recently I decided to check out hotel tonight for hotel rooms in Las Vegas. There isn’t a week that passes where I don’t get a message asking where to get a last-minute hotel deal. I’ve heard a lot about the app and the travel people I know speak highly of it. In brief, hotel tonight provides last-minute discounted hotel rooms. The rates are for that night (you can stay up to 5 nights but rates may change) and not next month. As they say, they aren’t hotel tomorrow.

Hotel Tonight doesn’t offer rooms at every hotel – just where they can provide discounted rooms. The other day I did a quick check of rates in Las Vegas and found this basic El Cortez room for $20. It was $40 on the El Cortez website. Nice 50% discount. El Cortez doesn’t have a resort fee but if they did you would have to pay that directly to the hotel. Resort fees are noted when you book. Hotel Tonight doesn’t get involved with that nonsense.

Hotel Tonight El Cortez

There were rooms available from Hard RockPalms and a few other hotels in Vegas. None of the options were awesome but were all clean and cheap places to stay in different parts of Las Vegas.

Hotel Tonight is great for locals like me that may need a crash pad after a night of too much fun. The app is also great for last-minute trips to Vegas. If you’re already in Vegas for vacation you can check the app for a 2nd discount party room or suite. Yesterday there was a Palms suite for under $100. That’s the kind of deal I would get for a last-minute $5 Pai Gow rager.

Hotel Tonight App Countdown

I’m an early riser and I like to plan my day and night as early as I can. Before today Hotel Tonight rooms were only available after noon local time (anywhere you are). Today that switched. Rooms from Hotel Tonight are now available at 9am. I started writing this at 8 something but rooms for today are now available. Here’s a few options for today. The Palms suite I referenced earlier isn’t shown here but is available once again for $99.

Hotel Tonight Thursday

Hotel Tonight has room deals in other cities and is definitely an app that anyone traveling should have. You can download for iPhone and Android.

William Hill Fails In Amish Land (As It Should)

William Hill Mobile Sports Betting App Fail
William Hill Mobile App Fail

Part of my recent vacation took me to visiting family in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. That’s where I met the little cat who you met last week. While BSing about sports I decided to see what would happen if I tried to use my William Hill app to place a wager on a game outside of Nevada state lines.

Using the app wasn’t an entire fail but placing the wager didn’t work. I was able to browse all of the point spreads for the college football games I was curious about. I was able to line up a parlay as well but when I went to place the wager I was met with the fail screen above.

The app is still useful when you’re not in Nevada even if you can’t place wagers. You can keep funds in your account when you’re not in Las Vegas and this is a good way to keep track of actual live odds and point spreads. You can use the point spreads to practice wagering while you are away from Las Vegas or you can use the info to prepare for your wagers just before your next trip.

I was expecting a fail when I tried to place the wager. William Hill (and all sports gaming apps) not only track your phone by its internal GPS but they triangulate it’s location using mobile phone satellites. I’m not sure how that all works but the Nevada Gaming Commission is very strict about this.

I’d like to personally thank William Hill for not allowing me to make this particular parlay while I was away. I don’t remember the specific teams anymore but I know it lost. Onward and upward!

Over 4% Of English iPhone Users Have Sports Betting Apps

William Hill Mobile App
William Hill Mobile App

Mobile gaming is just beginning and sports bettors in the United Kingdom are leading the way. Over 4% of iPhone users have a sports betting app on their phone.

In December 2012, comScore estimated that there were 8.65m active iPhone users in the UK. If that figure has stayed constant, based on Onavo’s 4.3% figure, it would mean around 372k Brits are using sports betting apps on their iPhones.

Rosen says that companies in the US are watching the UK closely, since it’s one of the most established mobile gambling markets in the world, ahead of what they hope will be legislation to make real-money gambling legal on mobile phones across the US.

William Hill leads the way with app use in the UK with more than 1/3rd of those sports betting apps in use being theirs. 38% of sports betting apps in use belong to William Hill. People with the William Hill app use it about 4 times a month. That’s second behind Bet 365 whose app is used over 5 times a month.

I’m not sure this is 100% applicable but if you translated these numbers to the population of Nevada (2 million in NV vs. 63 mm in UK) there would be about 11,000 mobile sports bettors between the William Hill, Cantor Gaming and Station Casinos sports betting apps. They’d be making somewhere between 40,000 and 50,000 wagers per month coming from iPhones alone.

With mobile gaming and mobile sports betting still in its infancy I think those 3 companies in the US would be satisfied with those results. As the legality of online gaming expands so will that number and these companies will be the leaders.

Blackjack Tips

Marc has provided a lot of good information about blackjack lately and I hope he doesn’t mind if I add my two cents. I started playing the game in 2004 (an Atlantic City trip report I may write someday) based mainly on the writings of ESPN’s Bill Simmons, aka ‘The Sports Guy’ (ED: Download Free Podcast), back when he was funny (ED: He’s still funny, you’re just desensitized to it.). Prior to the trip, I taught myself basic strategy by purchasing some software for my PC and playing it until most of the strategy became second nature.

Neither this game nor Bill Simmons, however, could teach me the ‘unwritten rules of blackjack’. Okay, in retrospect, I probably could’ve Googled it, had I known they existed. Heck, I could Google it right now, but then a) I wouldn’t have an article to write or b) my article would clearly be biased by what I’ve read. So, when you’re done reading, feel free to add your own in the comments, but if you think I missed something obvious, now you know why.

General Play

  • When joining a game mid-shoe, it never hurts to ask the players already in the game if you can join. (ED: I never join mid-shoe and hate when people do)
  • If you are dealt a double-down opportunity, it is perfectly acceptable to double your bet by moving your chips into position before it is your turn. There is a slim chance that the dealer has a 10 up card and turns over an Ace, but any good dealer will return your second bet to you while taking your first. Naturally you wouldn’t do this if the dealer was showing an Ace.
  • I don’t think there’s any situation where you’d split 5s, but a dealer must ask you if you want to double or split them. Since casinos are noisy (that is why there are hand signals, of course!), you can hold your index finger up, like a 1, meaning ‘1 card’, which is all you get when you double.
  • When the first round of cards are dealt, it is nice to wish any players that their Aces become blackjacks/naturals by lightly banging/tapping the table in their direction and saying “Good luck on your Ace”.
  • It’s obvious that you can touch your chips after you get paid for a win and normally the dealer takes your chips as soon as you lose. But what about a push? As I learned the hard way, DO NOT touch your chips until the dealer gets to your position and bangs/taps the felt in front of you to signal ‘push’ to the ‘eye in the sky’.

  • There are two main ways to tip your dealer: 1) slide a chip into the ‘dealer zone’, that nebulous area best described as “around the insurance line”; a comment like “that’s for you” should convey the message and 2) make a bet for the dealer by placing your chip(s) near your betting stack, akin to the Moon orbiting the Earth.
  • In the event of a push, I usually but not always remember to ask the dealer what he/she prefers. Most often, they’ll ‘let it ride’. I don’t think I’ve had anyone take the tip on a push.
  • True story: my first or second time playing, a player to my left, during the betting portion, reached over and put singles/whites ‘in orbit’ around all our bets. I had no idea what she was doing. It was only when we all won and I went to take the money that I learned she was tipping the dealer on all our hands. I have never seen this since.
  • When coloring up at the end of a session, if I don’t think I’ve tipped enough, I try to remember to keep a red (or two) to the side so it’s not included in the coloring. That way I’m not digging in my wallet for some small bills after being handed a stack of greens and blacks.

That’s all I can think of at the moment. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!
