Las Vegas Blackjack Research

I have been on the hunt for the past few weeks to find infomation on Las Vegas blackjack payouts by casino.  While that information has showed me some new resources that search has also led me to many dead ends.

It seems as if the Las Vegas blackjack community is loud, but not as organized as the video poker players I’ve met.  So what have I learned from my search?

17’s:  Almost every table in Las Vegas seems to be where the dealer hits on soft 17.  This is to the advantage of the casino.  All tables in Atlantic City have dealers hiting on soft 17, so I’m used to this.

Payouts:   Blackjack pays both 6:5 and 3:2 in most casinos.  It seems as if 6:5 is taking over and the game most easily available.  3:2 blackjack games are supposedly hidden.

Shoe vs. Single Deck:  6:5 blackjack increases the house advantage by 1.39% when playing with a shoe.  House advantage with single deck goes from .2% to 1.6%.

Best reference found:  BJ21.com.  This was the best reference I was able to find.  For more details on 6:5 odds take a look at this post.

Best community:  The Las Vegas Trip Advisor forum had many willing voices.  While the Atlantic City forum has more video poker advice, Las Vegas’ forum had more people that played a wider variety of games.

What did I learn?  Not too much.  I really learned the difference between 6:5 payouts vs. 3:2 payouts.  I knew a little, but I feel much more well versed.  As long as I keep my wits about me I should be able to find a 3:2 blackjack game.  I’m not sure that will happen, but at least I know.

If you have any more references, please email me or comment below to share with everyone.

Betting on the NFL Draft!

I was watching ESPN over the weekend and there was wall to wall coverage, as usual, in preparation of the 2009 NFL Draft.  After repeated stories of the NY Jets looking for a way to draft USC QB Mark Sanchez my mind wandered.  The NFL always has a reason to gamble and, of course, sportsbook.com has prop bets ready.

People from New Jersey Want Sports Betting

A Fairleigh Dickenson study shows that New Jersey residents wan’t sports gambling.  In fact they want it by more than a 2 to 1 ratio.  The sample size is very small but, as someone who would love to see legal sports gambling in New Jersey, this is nice to see.

In the poll, 63 percent of New Jerseyans said they support making sports betting legal at the 11 Atlantic City casinos, while 32 percent opposed it. Men favored it by a 69-27 margin, while women’s support was softer at 58-36.

Its interesting to see the difference in where these same people would like to see sports gambling.

The poll also found similarly strong support for allowing sports betting at horse racing tracks, by a margin of 63 percent to 30 percent.

But voters were nearly split on whether to allow it at off-track betting parlors, with 48 percent saying yes and 43 percent saying no.

By a wide margin, 66 to 26 percent, New Jerseyans oppose legalizing sports betting by telephone and the Internet.

I find it strange that anyone would want to legalize sports gambling in public, but not on the internet – in the privacy of someone’s home.  I must be missing something there.

Hopefully, the continued public acceptance of sports gambling will prove to government that there is a place for this.  This can only help the casino business.

Penny Slots are NOT Your Friend

As I’ve mentioned before, the lower the denomination on a slot machine the worse the payout.  Todays Press of Atlantic City goes a little deeper into that subject.  Here are some nuggets from the article.

  • Penny machines outperformed all other slot machines in 2008.
  • While Atlantic City’s casino revenue has plummeted overall, the take from penny slot machines and their 2-cent counterparts rose 8.4 percent last year, compared with 2007, to nearly $698 million.
  • Every property in town except for Showboat Casino-Hotel added more penny machines last year. There are currently 7,584 penny slots, a nearly 20 percent increase from 2007, New Jersey Casino Control Commission statistics show.
  • They represent 22 percent of Atlantic City’s 34,000 total slot machines.
  • Borgata boosted its penny slots inventory last year by 32 percent and trails only Bally’s Atlantic City and Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort in the number of 1-cent machines. At the end of 2008, Bally’s had 991, the Taj Mahal 946 and Borgata 927 of those slots

Casinos will only add a game if it makes them money.  Clearly there are of these machines and they are making casinos money.  It’s humnan nature to think anything that costs a penny will allow your dollar to go farther.  When it comes to gambling, that is counter-intuative.

I’ve noticed more slot machines in casinos, but never consciously thought about it.  Now that I think about it, I’ve definitely been drawn into some of these penny slots over the past year.  For me, they are little more than entertainment.  I enjoy playing slots with bonus games like Top Gun or Golden Monkey.  If I win, it’s a bonus.  I know going in that I shouldn’t expect to win.  With that mindset I can happily enjoy these games for what they’re worth.

Slot Machine Payouts – April 9, 2009

As I’ve mentioned before I find slot machine payout percentages very interesting.  I used to look more in depth for information from local gaming commissions.  Every time I looked I found the same thing.  The higher the denomination, the higher the payout.  With that being said, with a trip planned for Las Vegas I’m happy to see their slot machines are paying out a little better than the last time I checked.

These payouts include all machines: video poker, keno and slots.  Total machine payout %’s for all denominations.

All information was taken from Gamblingteachers.com who take the time to gather and share this information.  Again, I’ve only posted payout information for where I normally would gamble.  For slot machine payout information from all parts of the country make sure you check out their site.  It’s chock full of great information.

What does this mean for me?  It means that I won’t shy away from playing slot machines in Las Vegas if I get the itch.  If payouts last month trended lower I’d probably spend my low limit wandering playing video poker.  It’s nice to see that Las Vegas payouts are much better than Atlantic City and Connecticut.  It’s nice to see that until I head back to the east coast casinos.

Las Vegas Video Poker Research Part 2

Last month I began to examine video poker pay tables for casinos that I plan on enjoying on my next trip to Las Vegas.  As I found out it seems any 9/6 Jacks or Better machines are $5 and above.

This time I explore the best paying games at those same casinos below $5 that are not 9/6 Jacks or Better.  I’m editing all information to just show the best paying games below $5.  When playing 9/6 Jacks or Better I usually play $1 machines.

Like part 1 of my research all information taken from the wonderful people at vpFREE2.

While there is a good variety of video poker games the pay tables outside of the Palms are less than optimal.

While reading through this information and receiving tips from others I decided to brush up on my Double Double Bonus Poker strategy at Wizard of Odds this weekend.  It’s a pretty volatile game, but it’s strategy is very similar to Jacks or Better which I’ve pretty much mastered.

I consider my video poker research complete.  I’ll practice strategy a little more throughout the month.  Next on the research list is Blackjack payouts.

Betting on Golf? The Masters Odds Are In

I was looking for a game to bet on sportsbook.com while watching the Final 4 this weekend.  While looking around I decided to check on odds for the Masters, which begins on Thursday.

I know a little more about golf than I do NASCAR, which I took a chance on betting for the Daytona 500 earlier this year.

Unless you’re betting on Tiger Woods or Phil Mickleson you will find pretty big payout potential with everyone else in the field.  I know a few of these golfers and I will place a few small bets after doing a little research during the week.

World Series Prop Bets

This is my favorite time of the year.  The weather is getting warmer and baseball season is starting!  The first game of the year is this Sunday.  What better time to make World Series picks?  I don’t tend to make picks at the beginning of the baseball season because the season is so long.  After looking at the pre-season odds I may change my mind.

All odds are courtesy of sportsbook.com – where I do all of my online sports gambling.

Arizona Diamondbacks           +1500
Atlanta Braves             +3000
Baltimore Orioles         +8000
Boston Red Sox             +500
Chicago Cubs             +700
Chicago White Sox         +4000
Cincinnati Reds         +5000
Cleveland Indians         +1500
Colorado Rockies         +7500
Detroit Tigers             +2000
Florida Marlins         +3000
Houston Astros             +10000
Kansas City Royals         +8000
Los Angeles Angels         +1200
Los Angeles Dodgers         +1800
Milwaukee Brewers         +5000
Minnesota Twins         +3000
New York Mets             +700
New York Yankees         +350
Oakland Athletics         +4000
Philadelphia Phillies         +1500
Pittsburgh Pirates         +10000
San Diego Padres         +10000
San Francisco Giants         +3000
Seattle Mariners         +8000
St Louis Cardinals         +2500
Tampa Bay Rays             +1200
Texas Rangers             +10000
Toronto Blue Jays         +7500
Washington Nationals         +10000

Betting $100 returns the amount after the “+.”  There are plenty of good returns available.  The favorites such as the Yankees, Mets and Red Sox have a decent return.

There are good returns available for some of the teams that have an outside chance.  Giants and Marlins seem to have great pitching staffs.  The Tampa Bay Rays are 12-1 and last years champs, the Phillies, are 15-1.

All of this is making me reconsider not placing a few small bets before the season starts.  If I decide to make any bets, I’ll update this post this weekend.

UPDATE: I’ve decided not to make any World Series bets.  I need quicker gratification.  I’ll look to the Masters instead.

Bally’s Las Vegas Closes Sportbook

This week Bally’s in Las Vegas closed their sportsbook for the Summer.

Deanna Pettit, a spokeswoman for Bally’s, confirmed the 285-seat sports book’s closure, but she said the move is temporary. The sports book is scheduled to reopen in September.

Pettit wouldn’t elaborate on reasons for the closing, but she said remodeling was not a factor. The sports book will occupy the same spot when it reopens in the fall. For now, the sports book at Paris Las Vegas will do double duty and serve customers of Bally’s. Harrah’s Entertainment owns both resorts.

I’ve never been to Bally’s, but evidently the Paris sportsbook and Bally’s sportsbook aren’t too far away.  Apparently, less than 10 jobs will be lost.  I think more money would be save on electricity than the payroll.

Bally’s in Atlantic City has made similar small closures to parts of the casino.  This is the first move like this that I’ve seen in Las Vegas.  It probably won’t be the last.  I guess every penny saved nowadays is a penny earned.
